There’s more to Father’s day than meets the eye

One of our favourite Father’s day quotes was obviously from some Dad’s Daughter but the Author is unknown. She said “A little girl giggles when she is denied an ice-cream by her mother. She knows Daddy will get her some later.”

We think it’s cute – and very true. Certainly there are many reasons to celebrate Dads and Father’s day is as appropriate as Mom’s days we think – but believe it or not, Father’s day is not just simply the invention of a chain store or a well-known restaurant.

According to ‘Livescience.com’ (so it’s not just a rumour) Father’s day has a clear origin, in the USA at least and celebrated its 100th Birthday in 2010. So we realised that this tribute to Dads is not just a commercial enterprise, but there’s more to Father’s day than meets the eye!

Where did it start?

It’s been suggested that the idea of Father’s Day could even originate from pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the Sun as the father of the universe. Some people, therefore, see a link between Father’s day and the June solstice. The idea to celebrate ‘Father’s day’ however, was started in the USA.

According to the aforementioned publication, Life Science, In May of 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, decided during a Mother’s Day sermon to dedicate a day to her Dad. He was William Jackson Smart, whose wife had died giving birth to her and he had raised her and his other five children on his own.

The following year, on June 5th, her father’s birthday, Dodd petitioned for the holiday to be recognised in her city. Needing more time to arrange the festivities, Spokane’s mayor pushed the date back by two weeks and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.

Just coincidently and rather ironically, our Father’s day this year on June 16th falls on the public holiday – ‘Youth day,’ which commemorates the Sharpeville massacre and the fight against apartheid that many of our now Forefathers fought. Many of the children who were fought for and are still alive today can celebrate their heroic fathers from that era on the day.
